I am livid about this, and have already written to the judge, the Akron paper and the school board. All this woman wanted was to give her kids and herself a better life. Now, she can not be a teacher, her kids and she can basically wallow in the subsidized housing on welfare. That, basically, is what the judge has said. And yeah, I do see it as a Black & white thing (as I know a good 6 people who do the same thing), but also see it as a poor vs. suburban thing.
If all schools were properly funded, instead of rich areas using public school as cheaper alternatives to private schooling, this would not even be an issue.

Kelley Williams-Bolar, 40, was sentenced to 10 days in Akron, OH, three years of probation following her release and 80 hours of community service for being convicted of falsifying residency records so that her two children could attend Copley-Fairlawn schools.

Williams-Bolar, who was standing before the bench with her attorney, Kerry M. O%u2019Brien, nearly collapsed into the arms of sheriff%u2019s deputies as she was led away, sobbing loudly, to begin serving her jail term. She was convicted of two counts of tampering with records.

While her two girls were registered as living at an address with her father on Black Pond Drive in Copley Township within the school district, prosecutors said the children actually were living in Akron with their mother on Hartford Avenue in subsidized housing provided by the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority.

Cosgrove gave Williams-Bolar the maximum prison sentence, five years, for each of the two tampering charges and ordered the sentences to run concurrently.

But the judge suspended the five-year prison term in favor of the 10-day jail sentence and also ordered Williams-Bolar to perform 80 hours of community service in mentoring programs sponsored by her church or the NAACP.

Williams-Bolar, a single mother and a teaching assistant with special needs children at Buchtel High School, addressed the judge briefly before sentencing, saying %u201Dthere was no intention at all%u201D to deceive school district officials.

In asking Cosgrove to spare her from being taken into custody for any length of time, she said: %u201DMy girls need me. I%u2019ve never, ever gone a day without seeing them off. Never. My oldest daughter is 16. I need to be there to support them.%u201D

Wow. That's really horrible. I wish I had more online time to look into this more. I really feel bad for those kids, too. Cripes.

Here in Manitoba, you can register your kids outside of your district. I remember when that came about when I was in High School. A lot of kids transferred out of our small town school and into larger schools like the one in Selkirk, which offered so many more options. I considered it, but it didn't seem worth the 2.5 hour bus ride (each way).

That is the way all schools should be, IMO. However, so many schools here use local taxes, and have *very* expensive homes. So they have fancy schools. They basically don't want to pay for a private school, so use the fed money with theirs, and price the homes out of reach of Less Welcome People.

here is the main article. They try (I think) to make an excuse for the judge's behavior.

Thanks, :).

As an FYI - if you reply to a second comment in a thread, the person who started the thread won't get a notification unless it's their post or they 'subscribed' to the thread.

In other words, I didn't see this until I came back to reply to your first reply, :).

There are so many issues here. The one that really stands out is just how rankly UNFAIR this is.
